6-ISABEL II BRIDGE
Isabel II Bridge was one of the places where auxiliaries stood guard every day, so it often appears in photographs. It was partially destroyed by a bombardment on 2 April 1874 and the torrential rains of 12 April, making it impassable.
In addition, it is not unusual for photographs to show how the dry arches of bridges were used to store gunpowder. Gunpowder was moved there from the stores located in the Church of San Nicolás and Church of San Antón due to the fear that they might be targets for bombs.
Some of the bombs that fell in the Arenal gardens often failed to explode, like the one an auxiliary volunteer is pointing at in the photograph. We know that sometimes, in order to prevent them ending up exploding, some soldiers took the risk of removing the fuse, placing their lives in grave danger
